WRJ/Sisterhood Girls Love Science Campership Award

WRJ-TBK Sisterhood is excited to offer the Girls Love Science Award to two girls whose families are members of TBK so that they may attend the URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy summer camp. After a wonderful 2014 pioneer summer, the URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy summer sleep-away camp will again be accepting applications for boys and girls entering grades 5-10. The camp is about 30 miles north of Boston, MA and the campers loved it! Please see the camp website for details and stories at http://scitech.urjcamps.org

At the URJ-WRJ Biennial meeting in San Diego in December 2013, Sisterhood learned about the new camp and decided to establish this scholarship. Notice of the award came too late for most families who had already made summer commitments. This year, we are starting early!

For summer 2015 the award amount will be $2000 to be shared between two girls so that they may attend together. The awards will be given directly to the camp in the name of the girls to be applied to camp tuition and fees. Applicants must complete the application and respond to four short answer questions. For each girl, we ask for a recommendation from a teacher who can speak to the student’s personal qualities. We may also require an interview with the student before we make a final decision. Extra consideration will be given if a relative of a student is a member of WRJ/Sisterhood and/or if the student attends TBK Religious School.

Please send the completed application either by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by mail to: WRJ/Sisterhood Girls Love Science Award, Temple B’rith Kodesh, 2131 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14618 by January 1, 2015. A letter of recommendation form is attached to the application.  Please give the form to a teacher to complete and ask that he or she send it either by email or mail to the address above by January 1, 2015.

Call the WRJ/Sisterhood office at (585) 244-7060 or Liza Theuman if you have any questions.

Please note that this award is for girls and is based on merit, not financial need. The camp website lists other scholarship opportunities that are open to both girls and boys. TBK and the Jewish Federation of Rochester also offer scholarships for boys and girls. It is possible that all scholarships may be used in combination with the Girls Love Science Award; contact them for information.

Floral Fund Renamed

floralSome people have wondered what the WRJ/Sisterhood Floral Fund provides. Contributions to the Floral Fund are used to provide flowers (real and silk) for Shabbat and holiday services, to enhance the beauty of the temple, and to contribute to the care and upkeep of the courtyard and gardens.

To reflect such uses of the Floral Fund, the WRJ/TBK Sisterhood board voted to rename it the Floral and Beautification Fund to more accurately reflect its mission. Please continue to contribute to this fund as always, and know that you are adding to the beauty of our temple by providing flowers, and other touches big and small. Thank you.

WRJ/Sisterhood welcomes new babies to our Temple family! A member of our Cradle Roll Committee makes a personal visit to each family, bringing gifts and "Mazel Tov"!

Why Not Sponsor an Oneg Shabbat?

It is a lovely tradition to sponsor a Friday evening Oneg Shabbat in honor of a forthcoming wedding, wedding anniversary, a special person or event, someone's birthday, the birth or naming of a child or grandchild, or a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. You may become a sponsor by making a donation to the Belle Rose-Beck Bernstein Sabbath Fund, which enables Sisterhood to continue this beautiful conclusion to our Friday evening services.

As a sponsor, your name will be printed in the program passed out at Friday evening services and in the Temple bulletin. You will also be asked to participate, if you wish, in the service on the date you are sponsoring.

For more information, please call Margie Sabath, 271-3773 or Sue Eckhaus at the Sisterhood Office, 244-7060 x. 233.
