Social Action Coordinating Committee to Set New Agenda
Last year at this time the SACC committed to a major project, sponsoring Project Homeless Connect Rochester. TBK has put a lot of energy into the project and it looks like it will be a good project for the Rochester community. With that behind us, this fall we will discuss what to do next. There are several suggestions.
Rabbi Gutterman has suggested that we should build a relationship with Rural Migrant Ministries, a process that was begun when our confirmation class visited one of their locations last year. RMM is a statewide ecumenical project that "works for the creation of a just rural New York State." At our November meeting (the first committee meeting this fall), we will have visitors from RMM to explore how we might get involved. One idea that has been suggested is to explore concepts of ethical kashrut, the idea that kosher eating involves fair conditions for workers in the food industry as well as humane conditions for the animals we eat. There is a big statewide meeting on RMM on October 15 near Albany. If any congregants would like to represent us there, we might get a better view of how our congregation might get involved. A second idea for a new congregational project is to get involved with Vote Rochester (VoteRochester.org) a project of the League of Women Voters to increase voter registration in Monroe County, which is looking for partner organizations.
If you have other ideas for TBK social action, contact committee chair Barbara Grosh at 264-1691 or Barbara@grosh.net or come to our monthly meeting to share your ideas.
