TBK members have been helping to fulfill this mitzvah by welcoming newly arrived Afghan and Iraqi families for several years now, as part of our partnership with Keeping Our Promise. We have a new family - 2 parents, with a 3-year-old son – arriving soon. They will be living in an apartment on Bobrich Drive where they will quarantine for 2 weeks, with the support of the Department of Health. We also have a family of 7 arriving in December. Both families will need a Caring Circle to help them navigate their new lives here in Rochester.
In the early months after arrival, Caring Circle members take the family to medical appointments, make sure SNAP benefits are working, help with getting the kids registered for school, and help with library cards and the like. Getting familiar with public transportation and shopping routines is also a goal - learning about American money, setting up a checking account, etc.
If you would like additional information on what’s involved please write the Keeping Our Promise Caring Circle organizer Deb Abell at debabell66@gmail.com.
