TBK Religious School

Curriculum - 7th grade to 12th grade

Seventh Grade
As our students prepare to become B’nai Mitzvah, they learn about the Holocaust – one of the defining events of contemporary Judaism. Utilizing developmentally age-appropriate resources, students explore the significance of this time as a supportive classroom community. This experience helps build strong Jewish identities and compassion for one another.

Eighth Grade
Students in eighth grade will spend the first hour of Sunday mornings learning with Jacqui Lipschitz how they can best assist the classroom teacher or enrichment leader and be a positive role model to the students in their class. After learning the ropes, they will be assigned a classroom or enrichment and will have opportunities to assist teachers and lead activities.

Ninth & Tenth Grade
Starting this year, our Confirmation program will be a two year experience.  The program is facilitated by both Rabbi Stein and Rabbi Tulik and the curriculum revolves around a core set of subjects, with additions to be made based on student interest and current events.  We will explore Comparative Judaism, Comparative Religions, Ethics and Jewish Decision Making, Classic and Modern Jewish Texts, Israel, and Antisemitism.  A significant part of the Confirmation experience is dialogue and debate, and building new relationships with the other students and with the rabbis.

The culmination of the Confirmation experience is leading the service on the holiday of Shavuot.  Our 10th Graders will be Confirmed but all of the students will help shape the service and participate in leading the congregation. Confirmation class meets weekly Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30. A highlight of the Confirmation year is the annual trip to Washington DC to the Religious Action Center L’taken Social Justice Seminar. This is an incredible opportunity for students to see advocacy and government in action.

11th and 12th Grades
Students in eleventh and twelfth grade can spend all of Sunday assisting in a classroom or leading an enrichment special. They can choose to receive community service credit or can be paid for their work in the school.
